NSAIDS after Bariatric Surgery
What are NSAIDs?
Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, frequently referred to as NSAIDs are medications that are used to relieve pain.
Examples of NSAIDs include
- Aspirin (Excedrin)
- Ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin)
- Naproxen (Aleve)
- Meloxicam
- Celebrex
- Diclofenac
Is it safe to take NSAIDs after surgery?
NSAIDs are best avoided for the first 3-6 months post operatively for laparoscopic vertical sleeve gastrectomy patients and for life after bypass. If needing to restart takings NSAIDs after this time period you should concurrently take a Proton Pump Inhibitor (esomeprazole-Nexium, lansoprazole- Prevacid, omeprazole- Prilosec, pantoprazole- Protonix, dexlansoprazole-Dexilant).
Why is it best to avoid NSAIDs after surgery?
NSAIDs increase your risk of stomach upset, ulcers, and bleeding. NSAIDs can increase stomach upset and can cause ulcers or bleeding in the stomach or intestines.
Are there alternatives to NSAIDs?
There are other medications that are available to help control pain. It is safe to take Tylenol over the counter. If you need something stronger than Tylenol, then you will need to speak with your primary care provider to discuss safe alternatives.
