What’s The Difference Between Ozempic and Wegovy?
Ozempic and Wegovy are brand names for the medication known as Semaglutide. They are both GLP-1 receptor agonists which means they help with weight loss by mirroring the function of a naturally occurring hormone- GLP-1 (glucagon-like-peptide-1). These medications serve to help reduce appetite, regulate blood sugar after meals, and slow gastric emptying.
The main differences between the Ozempic and Wegovy include:
- Dosing strengths: Ozempic is available in strength up to 2mg and Wegovy is available up to 2.4mg.
- FDA approval: Ozempic is FDA approved for Type 2 diabetes and used off label for weight loss. Wegovy is FDA approved for the treatment of those considered overweight or obese.
- Average weight loss: Some adults taking Ozempic achieved up to 15% weight loss. 1 in 3 adults taking Wegovy achieved 20% weight loss.
While these medications are effective on their own, the best results are realized only in conjunction with a diet and exercise program. Please contact our office to find out how we can help you to get started on your weight loss journey.
