Planning for Diet Requirements and Weight Loss Surgery in 2020
Did you know that some insurance carriers require a medically supervised diet before bariatric surgery can take place? If you would like to achieve your weight loss goals in 2020 with an effective procedure like gastric sleeve or gastric bypass, you should start the process now. You can even do so from the comfort of your own home! We are now offering virtual consultations for current and prospective patients. While it may seem early, these diet deadlines are fast approaching! Our team at St. Louis Bariatrics has done the research and is here to help you plan for this requirement.
If you are planning to have weight loss surgery later this year, we recommend that you start planning for this requirement as soon as possible. While the timeline for these diets vary, most range from 90 days up to 6 months prior to surgery. If you are not sure which timeline applies to your coverage, we can help with that, too! Please fill out our Free Insurance Check to find out.
If your insurance carrier requires a 6-month diet, you should plan to begin it by May or June, at the very latest. For example, if you want to have surgery by November of this year, you will need to begin your diet in mid to late May. However, if you begin your diet in early June, you may be ready for surgery by December.
Alternatively, if your insurance carrier requires a 90-day timeline, we recommend that you begin your diet at the beginning of August, to be ready for surgery by mid-November.
Please also keep in mind that even after these diets are completed, insurance review and approval will take additional time. We suggest that you start this process as early as possible to make sure that your weight loss goals for the year can be realized.
