Bariatric-Friendly Coffee Order
Do you miss your favorite coffee order from before your bariatric surgery? It can be tricky to figure out what the best coffee choice is for your new lifestyle. Use this guide to help you pick a bariatric-friendly beverage:
- Any sugar-free syrups = 0 calories
- Brewed coffee (hot or iced) = 5 calories
- Café Americano = 10 calories
- Espresso = less than 20 calories
- Cappuccino with skim milk = 60 calories for 12 fl oz
- Latte with skim milk or unsweetened milk alternative (hot or iced) = 60 calories for 12 fl oz
- Tea (hot or iced) = 5 calories
Tips on How to Customize Your Drinks:
- Avoid using whipped cream.
- Choose smaller sizes.
- Opt for lower-fat milk options or unsweetened milk alternatives—whole milk is often the default for most drinks.
- Use sugar-free syrups and sugar substitutes.
- Add protein powder or a protein shake to boost nutrition.
- Order online—many coffee shops have mobile apps that allow you to customize your drink, making it easier to choose healthier options.
Caffeine Reminder:
Opt for decaf beverages for at least 1–2 months after surgery. Caffeine can delay healing, and your risk of dehydration is higher during the first few weeks post-surgery. Ensure you’re well-hydrated before reintroducing caffeinated drinks into your routine, aiming for at least 64 fluid ounces of hydrating fluids per day. Additionally, avoid drinking coffee on an empty stomach—try having breakfast or a protein shake first.
